Mission Statement
Geopolitics is back. A new era of great-power rivalry has begun – from the scramble for natural resources and technology to the battle of narratives and the return of war on the continent.
To flourish in this new age of conflict, Europe must learn to act and think in terms of power, interests and strategy. It is a change that poses tough and profound questions and that jars with the continent’s self-image as a beacon for peace and values.
And yet, to preserve its democratic openness on the inside, Europe must strengthen its posture towards the outside. A Rubicon needs to be crossed. A novel orientation towards geography and history must be developed, a new political language that reflects today’s realities.
This shift in outlook will not happen without catalysts. It demands a steady stream of bold and thought-provoking research, as well as a dedicated space for debate. It needs a central pivot that connects the best strategic minds from Europe’s east, west, north and south.
Such a hub and pivot is what the Brussels Institute for Geopolitics aspires to be.
