As the EU delegation arrives at COP30 in Brazil, it will once again champion ambitious global climate policy. But back home, Europe’s green transition is increasingly shaped – and strained – by global power politics. From China’s grip on critical minerals to the strategic risks of US LNG dependence and the lingering shadow of Gazprom, the EU faces a complex energy dilemma.
Is Europe trapped between Trump, Gazprom and China’s state-subsidized clean tech? Or can the energy transition itself become a source of strategic strength?
You’re cordially invited to the Brussels Institute for Geopolitics for a timely discussion on how the EU can navigate this shifting landscape. Our expert panel will explore the trade-offs between energy security, industrial competitiveness and climate leadership, and assess how Europe can turn its green ambitions into geopolitical advantage long beyond Belém.
We’ll be joined by influential expert voices on these pressing issues, including:
- Anthony Agotha, Principal Adviser, Climate Diplomacy (EEAS) - joining live from Belém
- Ben Gibson, Senior Manager for Geopolitics, Global Regulatory & Public Affairs, Ørsted
- Thijs Van de Graaf, BIG’s Energy Fellow and associate professor in International Politics at Ghent University
The conversation will be followed by a Q&A and a small reception.
Between what’s agreed in Belém and Europe’s green energy future, there lies uncertain geopolitical reality. Join us as we chart a course through the risks and opportunities on the way.
