Save the Date: Who Speaks for Europe? A conversation with Herman Van Rompuy
Date: 9 May 2025
Location: Hôtel van Eetvelde
Time: Doors open at 3:30pm. The event commences at 4:00pm.
Join us on Europe Day (9 May) at the Brussels Institute for Geopolitics for a conversation with Herman Van Rompuy together with BIG’s founding Director Luuk van Middelaar on the topic of ‘Who speaks for Europe.’
Yet again Europe is finding its historical footing in the throes of crisis. With conflict on the eastern front and a trade war to its west, can Europe find the political and strategic vocabulary to articulate its place in the world?
Who can embody the European narrative? Who will take Europe beyond the identity formed at its inception – one that now feels out-moded, based on a belief that war was a thing of the past. Can anyone lead a geopolitical Europe?
To mark Europe Day and the 75th anniversary of the Schuman declaration, the Brussels Institute for Geopolitics is honoured to host Herman Van Rompuy, the first permanent President of the European Council (2009–14) and former Prime Minister of Belgium (2008–09).
It will be followed by a discussion with other esteemed guests exploring the vital question of who embodies Europe’s voice both domestically and on the global stage and a Q&A session.
To toast this special occasion, the discussion will be followed by a reception and music by The Lascar String Quartet at the Art Nouveau landmark, the Hôtel van Eetvelde.
Celebrate Europe Day with the Brussels Institute or Geopolitics!
