Spain joins the Brussels Institute for Geopolitics
The Brussels Institute for Geopolitics welcomes the decision by Spain to join the Institute as a full member starting January 2025.
It follows dialogue and meetings in Madrid and Brussels to explore potential synergies, resulting in the Spanish decision to formalise the process.
Spain will join six other EU member states, including France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, plus other stakeholders in supporting the Institute.
Europe faces an alarming array of challenges that demand innovative thinking and actionable solutions. The Spanish government’s intention to join BIG demonstrates its commitment to building a more strategic Europe. Spain’s diplomatic clout and cultural heritage, its role as bridge to Latin America and Northern Africa, and its leadership in key sectors such as telecommunications, banking and renewable energy will bring invaluable insights and expertise to the Institute’s network.
Following the withdrawal of Board member and Vice-Chair Rita Faden at the end of last year, the December 2024 General Assembly nominated State Secretary for Foreign and Global Affairs at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Diego Martínez Belío, as member of the Board, starting 1 January 2025.
The Board is composed of seven individuals representing the membership and is currently chaired by Heiko Thoms, State Secretary for Financial Market Policy, European Policy and International Financial Policy at the German Federal Ministry of Finance. Its role is to provide accountability and ensure the Institute positions itself at the forefront of actionable geopolitical thinking.
